He studied with Group of Seven member Arthur Lismer at the Art Gallery of Toronto in the 1930s, and served as an official war artist during World War II. He married fellow war artist Molly Lamb in 1945. Bobak moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick, in the 1960s to serve as the artist in residence and later the director of the Arts Centre at the University of New Brunswick.
