ABOUT CHRISTOPHER PRATT (1935-2022)
Christopher Pratt (Canadian, 1935-2022), ARCA CSGA OC, was a Canadian painter and printmaker recognized for his austere, meticulously composed representations of Newfoundland’s built and natural environments. Born in St. John’s, he began painting in 1952 and initially pursued studies in engineering and medicine before turning to fine arts at Mount Allison University under the guidance of Alex Colville and Lawren P. Harris. He continued his training at the Glasgow School of Art (1957–1959) and earned a BFA from Mount Allison in 1961.
Pratt’s work is defined by a minimalist sensibility and exacting technique, often depicting vernacular architecture, interiors, and coastal settings. His paintings and serigraphs evoke a restrained emotional register, engaging themes of solitude, memory, and place.
In 1980, Pratt designed the provincial flag of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1973 and promoted to Companion in 1983. His work is held in major public institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and The Rooms in St. John’s.
His legacy has been the subject of major institutional retrospectives and the 2018 documentary Immaculate Memories: The Uncluttered Worlds of Christopher Pratt, which explores his life, process, and philosophical engagement with the Newfoundland landscape.
