ABOUT CHARLES ANTHONY LAW

Charles Anthony Francis Law (Canadian, 1916–1996) was a Canadian naval officer and painter whose career bridged official military art and postwar Canadian landscape traditions. Born in London, England, to Canadian parents, Law immigrated to Canada in 1917. He studied with Franklin Brownell, F.H. Varley, and Percyval Tudor-Hart, and held his first solo exhibition in Quebec City in 1937. During the Second World War, he served both as a combat officer and an official war artist, producing 29 oil paintings and 75 sketches, now housed in the Canadian War Museum.

Following his retirement from the Royal Canadian Navy in 1966, Law became a key figure in Halifax’s arts infrastructure. He was instrumental in establishing the Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, serving as artist-in-residence at Saint Mary’s University from 1967 to 1980 and chair of the AGNS board from 1977 to 1979. His postwar work frequently depicted the Arctic and Atlantic coasts, adopting a realist style shaped by his early artistic training and the influence of the Group of Seven.

Law’s paintings are held in major Canadian collections, including the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the Confederation Centre of the Arts, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Canadian War Museum, the Musée naval de Québec, and Canada House in London.
